The Friends of Nesbitt Union Chapel cordially invites you
to attend its annual meeting on Saturday, June 25, from 11-1 at the Smyrna
Public Library, located at 100 Village Green Circle, Smyrna, Georgia 30080.
It has been a number of years since FNUC has organized an
annual meeting, but we have many exciting developments to share about our
on-going work with Cobb County to preserve the remaining chapel ruins, now
under the trusteeship of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, and to
advocate for the property’s return to public use, as specified in the
property’s original 1886 deed.
The meeting will include
·
a presentation on the history, architecture,
and current legal status of the chapel by historic preservationist Betsy Trope
·
a report on historic stonemason Ray Hall’s
interim stabilization of the remaining ruins
·
plans for a “ghost frame” incorporating and
stabilizing the ruins
·
a discussion of the property’s potential role
as a pocket park along the rejuvenated Powder Springs corridor, which will
connect Marietta to the battlefield park with a wider walking and bike path
·
an update on the FNUC’s successful effort to
secure 2016 SPLOST funds for the chapel; funding needs for development of
Master Plan
·
a chance to see, before or after the meeting,
an exhibit of paintings by FNUC
treasurer, Susan Smith (www.susanknightsmith.com)
on display at the Smyrna Library’s upstairs art gallery through June; all
proceeds from sales to be donated to the FNUC
Please feel free to forward this email or invite others
who may be interested in learning more about the chapel or who may want to
become involved in FNUC’s efforts.
If you’d like to contribute to the FNUC, we are a task
force of the nonprofit 501(c) 3 Cobb Land Trust and all donations are tax
deductible. Please make checks payable to CLT, earmarked Friends of Nesbitt
Union Chapel and mail to: Cobb
Land Trust, c/o Karin Guzy, 4531 Paper Mill Rd., Marietta, GA 30067.
Best Regards,
Lynn Murray, President
