Basic Design II   "At Home With Flowers"

Topiary Designs     class notes, page 1              Print PDF Document

A Topiary Design is a design created on a stylized or contrived tree form or living, clipped shrub or tree and adorned with cut plant material and (optional) non-plant material.

  • Stylized - personal style, your own
  • Contrived - a new form made from dried and/or fresh plant material or non-plant material

This must be a true creative design of original concept.

  • It is judged on the Scale of Points for Design.
  • Take into account all the Principles of Design

Consider what element will be dominant.
Scale is so important in this design.
Rhythm may be static but must be obtained by repetition of colors, size and forms.
Proportion is a main consideration with a topiary, considering the main part of the design is at the top of a tree form, making Balance another consideration.

For a flower show, this may NOT be a form with contrived decorations provided by the show committee. These forms with contrived decorations must be assigned to the Special Exhibits Division, Artistic Concepts, or Educational Sections.

Cannot be horticultural specimens. These living sculptured trees, void of adornment, are exhibited in the Horticulture Division in a separate section or the Special Exhibits Division, Educational Section.
